Fortis Hospitals organizes 1st Indian Coronary Surgery Congress in India

Fortis Hospitals, India's leading healthcare group under the leadership of Dr Vivek Jawali, ex president of the Indian Association of Cardiac thoracic surgeons (IACTS), is hosting the 1st Indian Coronary Surgery Congress in Bangalore today with an aim to create awareness on coronary surgery techniques among the medical fraternity. All over the world, Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death and morbidity and is perceived as a major public health problem. It is estimated that by 2020, CAD will be responsible for over 10 million deaths worldwide. In terms of treatment, there is an overwhelming evidence to show that Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery is the most effective in tackling diffusely diseased coronary arteries of the heart.

The first-of-its-kind two-day event aims at showcasing the latest and most advanced CABG techniques that surgeons all over the world are using to treat the ailment and will also deliberate on better management of heart patients. Eminent cardiac surgeons from across India and around the world including two globally renowned international faculty, five acclaimed faculty from top hospitals of the country and 40 senior cardiac surgeons will offer pearls of wisdom on surgical techniques for coronary artery disease and stimulate the knowledge of participating doctors. Around 400 cardiac surgeons and cardiac surgery aspirants are taking part in the programme.

The major highlight of the programme is that it will feature eight different and challenging cardiac operations performed live by the pioneers in the field of CABG surgery. This will include three minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (including the abdominal micro invasive CABG), one redo CABG (repeat of bypass grafting procedure after a primary surgery done earlier), one off-pump lower vessel aneurysm correction (CABG done without putting the patient on a heart lung machine) and total endoscopic LIMA takedown, in which a block in the Left Anterior Descending artery (LAD) that is in the front side of the heart, is removed through minimally invasive procedure by grafting the LAD using the Left internal mammary artery (LIMA) from the back of the breast bone. Apart from this, eminent cardiac surgeons will present 20 video-based talks on technical aspects of bypass grafting and the advancement in treatment of CAD, while giving useful tips on performing complex techniques.

"Across the world, there seems to be a high number of CABG procedures being performed. Considering that there is also a disturbing trend of repeat surgeries being done, it is necessary to impart the right information and training on advanced techniques. This programme will specifically focus on the merits of meticulous CABG techniques in treating multiple vessel blockages and will stress the importance of achieving complete revascularization to avoid a redo of the procedure," explained Dr. Vivek Jawali, Chairman, Dept. Of Cardio-Vascular Science, Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore.

Another highly anticipated session to look forward to is a hands-on Coronary Anastomoses training upon a Japanese computerized mannequin system where the aspiring cardiac surgeons can master the technique under the expert guidance of a senior cardiac surgeon.
