India to become global hub of international railway managers

In a historic step forward for making India the global hub for International Railway Managers, the Minister of Railways Shri Lalu Prasad here today laid the foundation stone for the International Railway Strategic Management Institute (IRSMI) to be set up in New Delhi. Also present on the occasion were the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Shri Montek Singh Ahluwalia, the Minister of States for Railways, Shri Naranbhai J. Rathwa, Chairman, Railway Board, Shri J.P.Batra who is also the Chairman of UIC, Ms Anne Marie Idrac, Vice Chairperson, UIC and Mr. Luc Aladiere, Chief Executive, UIC (Paris) among others.

Speaking on the occasion, the Shri Lalu Prasad said that with the integration of networks and overcoming of physical and non-physical barriers to trade, there is a need for an excellent reservoir of managerial talent in Railway sector. He said that the success story of Indian Railways has attracted the attention of Global Management Institutes towards the possibility of studying in detail about Railway sector and strategies and managerial skills which makes it possible for a mammoth Government organization with social obligation to run on commercial principles. IRSMI will become a premier Institute for developing leaders in Rail Industry and will become a temple of knowledge in the years to come, he said. The Minister assured full commitment of the Indian Government for making the Institute a successful venture The Institute, an initiative of Indian Railways and International Union of Railways (UIC), is planned to be fully operational by the year 2010 with independent Infrastructure.

The Institute will provide International training facilities in co-operation with top most global Business Schools to Railway professionals. This will make India a center for providing trained manpower to Rail Companies across the globe. The Institute under the aegis of International Union of Railways (UIC) will prepare International Railway managers to meet the future challenges in rail operations.
