Bangalore ,19 June - We have gathered from various media sources that the Karnataka Cabinet has approved the tabling of the Azim Premji University Bill in the next session of the Karnataka Assembly in July 2009.
Azim Premji Foundation had approached the Karnataka government in October 2008 with a proposal to set up an independent and autonomous private university via a state act following the Hon'ble Chief Minister's budget speech in 2008 that promised to encourage private universities in Karnataka.
We are very grateful that the Hon'ble Chief Minister, the Hon'ble Higher Education Minister and members of the Cabinet have approved the proposal. We hope that the Bill is taken up at the earliest and gets passed in the Assembly to pave the way for the first private university in Karnataka.
Azim Premji University will be promoted by Azim Premji Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, setup in 2001 with a vision to "Significantly contribute to achieve quality universal education to facilitate a just, equitable and humane society". The Foundation currently works closely in partnership with 13 state governments in India to pilot initiatives that have a potential for systemic change in India's government-run schooling system.
In our continuous desire to develop the education sector in India for long term sustainable change, we have proposed to establish Azim Premji University that will focus on creating education professionals, knowledge and research.
The University will aim to offer both long term and short term courses to develop a range of education specialists in the areas of teacher education, teaching-learning processes, education leadership & management and education policy. A significant focus at the University will be on education research and knowledge development.
The University will be self-financing and will be funded by Mr. Premji through an initial endowment of Rs 25 crore.
