"Change must come to Uttar Pradesh, only then will change come to India" - India Today Conclave 2014

Session - Identify Politics Vs development Agenda

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav asserted that the next government at the Centre will be a coalition of regional and national parties. "While time will tell what the hues of that coalition will be, one must recognise the reality that regional parties have a national role," he said at a session titled 'Identity Politics vs Development Agenda' at India Today Conclave 2014.

Dwelling on his own state, the Chief Minister said it is not fair to compare a big state like Uttar Pradesh with other states. "We need to remember that it took ten years to pull a state like Madhya Pradesh out of backwardness," he said. It is imperative that change must come to Uttar Pradesh, India's largest state in terms of population, because only then will change come to India at large, he added.

The Chief Minister also used the occasion to take potshots at his principal opponent within the state, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, and BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. He also dismissed the Aam Aadmi Party, saying there is a huge difference in doing politics in Delhi and agrarian states like Uttar Pradesh.
