Green Conference held at Canadian International School, Bangalore

The Canadian International School, Bangalore held its annual Green Conference at its campus which brought together around 50 young environmentalists from various international schools across Bangalore. The students spoke about the enormous environmental challenges and probable solutions which can be adopted and implemented by citizens, NGO's, environmentalists and world governments. The Best of Waste, Environmental Research Presentations, Green Walk, Solar Car Projects, Tetra pack bag and Organic food sale were some of the highlights of CIS Green Conference. The three R's of environmental conservation Reduce; Reuse and Recycle were emphasized and remained the focus of the event.

The CIS Green conference aimed to bring students from across Bangalore to strategize and sensitize environmental concerns of today and future plans to save our planet. The event gave an opportunity to children to present their thoughts and strategies for environmental conservation from an international perspective. Conferences like these promote greater understanding on the environment and help the child understand the importance of sustainability, water conservation, and environmental consciousness.

Each school presented their research project on specified topics which included organic farming and its benefits, endangered plants as per the IUCN Red list, the indispensable use of our rainforests - its impact on Climate change and the recent conservation efforts etc.

Children created models from waste materials like Tetra packs, cardboard boxes newspapers, plastic bottles etc. in the event called "The best of Waste". A robot which could power machines to produce electricity, windmills, pizza cooker and a book shelf for everyday use were some of the innovative creations which the delegates produced from the trash collected.

Students of CIS recycle Tetra packs which are send to an organization where it is cleaned and made into tetra pack bags. Recycling of waste paper and newspapers is an ongoing, year round activity. CIS is also proud to support paperless communication wherever possible.

"As a school, we strive to find new ways to stay ahead of the curve with our green initiatives. Our students have a lot to be proud of with regard to green initiatives they have taken on and off campus. All human beings have a responsibility towards protecting the environment. Our students are leading by example", adds Ms. Shweta Sastri, Executive Director - Canadian International School, Bangalore.

In the junior basketball court solar panel powered cars raced much to the delight of everyone. "I dream of solar cars being a reality in India by 2020" said Ratan Varghese, Grade 12 student at CIS.

Shane Kells, Head of School, CIS spoke about the environmental challenges and conservation measures which need local support in every part of the globe and how we all should be part of the nature.

Rob King (Middle School / High School Principal at CIS) made a comparative analysis of the environmental problems during the Industrial Revolution and the present day and the steps which can be initiated by us to create a greener world.

Allan Villiers (Elementary Principal at CIS) dealt with the benefits of using environmental friendly products and the importance of recycling in daily life which can have a lasting impact.
