Cyclonic storm 'NILAM' over southwest Bay of Bengal to bring more rains for Tamil Nadu

The deep depression over southwest Bay of Bengal remained practically stationary and intensified into Cyclonic storm 'NILAM'.It lay centred at 0830 hours IST of today, the 30th October 2012 near latitude 9.00N and longitude 82.00E, about 500 km south-southeast of Chennai and 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka). The system would move northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nagapattinam and Nellore by 31st October, 2012 afternoon/evening.

Under the influence of this system, rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall would occur over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 12 hrs. The intensity of rainfall would increase thereafter with scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall and isolated extremely heavy rainfall (25 cm or more) for subsequent 36 hrs. Isolated heavy rains would also occur over South Andhra Pradesh during next 48 hrs.

Squally winds speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph would prevail along and off north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during next 12 hours. The wind speed would gradually increase thereafter as the system comes closer to coast. Sea condition will be very rough to high along and off north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during next 48 hours. Fishermen along north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts are advised not to venture into the sea.

Damage expected as cyclone approaches near the coast: Damage to thatched huts. Breaking of tree branches causing minor damage to power and communication lines.
