Growing male infertility a major concern - says experts

Whenever a couple is unable to conceive, it is assumed that the female partner is at fault. Experts, however, say that 30% of the infertility problems pertain to female partner and an equal measure, 30% of the problems pertain to male partner. The remaining is either unexplained or problem with both partners. Over the years, infertility among men is on a steady increase. Many factors are attributed to this rise – predominant of these is the lifestyle choices people make. Experts point out that while infertility among men is increasing steadily, today men are also more open to seeking appropriate treatment than before.

Male Infertility (medically referred to as Andrology) refers to the failure of a couple to achieve conception due to problems specifically related to the man's sperm, seminal fluid, or reproductive organs. A number of things can affect sperm count, ability to move (motility) or ability to fertilize the egg. The most common causes of male infertility include: abnormal sperm production or function, problems with the delivery of sperm due to sexual problems, such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation etc, general health and lifestyle issues, such as poor nutrition, obesity, stress, or use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs, Overexposure to certain environmental hazards and toxins, such as pesticides, lead, paint, radiation etc, Ageing Male. Men older than age 40 may be less fertile than younger men etc.

Dr. Vasan S S, Uro-Andrologist & Managing Director, Ankur Healthcare Private Limited, India's premier center in innovative healthcare in Andrology, Men's Health & Reproductive Medicine said, "Over the last five years, male infertility is steadily increasing. In today's modern world, several factors aid infertility in men, particularly stress, smoking, alcohol consumption and pollution. In our experience we have also seen a paradigm shift in patient behavior… Today more men are willing to accept the problem and seek timely help and treatment than ever before. At our Center in Bangalore, on an average, we see more than 7,000 cases of male factor infertility per annum. Number of patients seeking surgical intervention too is steadily increasing."
