The announcement in the Railway Budget to introduce 179 escalators and 400 lifts at A-1 and other major stations, affixing Braille stickers with layout of coaches including toilets, provision of wheel chairs and battery operated vehicles at more stations and making coaches' wheel-chair friendly is definitely a move in the right direction. These changes along with reserving some JTBS to be reserved for disabled people will help reduced mobility populace navigate & use the station independently.
We at Svayam hope that these changes will be implemented on priority. However more changes are necessary and required. Besides dynamic features like elevators / lifts, non dynamic features like accessible inter-connected platforms and big ramps (as installed in Agra Railway station) are also needed. In addition, new coaches to be ordered and platforms to be upgraded should conform to global accessibility standards.
