JK Agri Genetic's major foray into Biotechnology research

JK Agri Genetics Ltd has announced that the Company engaged in the production and processing of high quality Hybrid and High yielding varieties of seeds, is a leader in the Seeds business settings its products under the well known brand "JK SEEDS". It is brand leader in several seeds including Jowar, Bajra, Cotton etc. The Company has also several upcoming products in pipeline particularly in the areas of rice, wheat, maize and vegetables. Its seeds are marketed in various States across the country including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, UP, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab etc. J K Seeds is a brand leader in several States. Over 1.5 million farmers are using JK Seeds which are cultivated over 3.3 million acres. It recently has been approved for commercialization of B T Cotton in India. In fact, the Company is the only Company in India to have developed B T Cotton out of its own internal technology developed by inhouse R&D Centre in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur.

The Company has a dedicated R&D Centre recognized by DSIR with state-of-art Biotechnology Laboratory at Hyderabad and Seed testing Centres spread across 36 locations in the country.

With a focus on biotechnology research, it has a dedicated well equipped research center. It is establishing a new world class biotech research center, near Hyderabad for which necessary land has been acquired. This will house a battery of scientists and qualified personnel with the latest facilities and equipments for DNA finger printing, molecular breeding, high throughput screening systems, specialized glass houses etc. The Company apart from having entered into research agreements with a number of Indian technology and science institutes has also tied up with several private and public research institutes overseas in Netherlands, US, Australia etc., said Mr Vikrampati Singhania, Director of the Company.

These will help the Company in developing superior hybrid seeds in the major crops like cotton, rice and mustard. It is also working on number of Novel genes that will improve the agri productivity while incorporating disease & pest tolerance and drought & salinity resistance.

The full impact of B T Cotton would be felt in the coming year with its commercialization across the country.

The Company has already filed a Scheme of Restructuring in the Hon’ble High Court of Calcutta which involves segregation of Investments and Seed Business. This Scheme shall result in the formation of two separate entities focusing on Seed business and Investment Business respectively. The Court approvals are expected to be received shortly.
