A New Sentinel for the Seas: INS Mahendragiri Commissioned into the Indian Navy

In a landmark moment for India's maritime security and indigenous defence capabilities, INS Mahendragiri, an advanced stealth frigate constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), was formally commissioned into the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam on Saturday, 11 July 2026. The commissioning ceremony was graced by the Honble Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh, marking yet another proud milestone in India's journey towards Atmanirbharta in Defence and the Government of India's vision of building a self-reliant defence ecosystem.

A Flagship of Indigenous Naval Engineering

Designed and built under Project 17A, INS Mahendragiri is the fourth ship of Nilgiri class stealth frigates built by MDL and represents a major leap forward in indigenous naval engineering. The basic design of the ship was developed by the Indian Navy's in-house design organisation, the Warship Design Bureau (WDB), while the detailed design and construction were undertaken by MDL, Mumbai. Every stage of construction was closely supervised by the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai), ensuring uncompromising adherence to the most stringent naval standards and quality benchmarks.

Power, Stealth and Combat Superiority

Measuring 149 metres in length and 17.8 metres in breadth, with a displacement of approximately 6,400 tonnes, INS Mahendragiri is powered by a sophisticated Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system comprising two Gas Turbines and two Main Diesel Engines, enabling the ship to achieve speeds exceeding 28 knots at desigii displacement. The vessel integrates state-of-the-art stealth technology, advanced weapon systems, modern sensors and highly automated systems that together deliver a decisive edge in combat effectiveness and operational efficiency.

The induction of INS Mahendragiri will substantially augment the Indian Navy's surveillance capabilities, operational reach and maritime security posture across the Indian Ocean Region - reinforcing India's vision of emerging as a strong, secure and technologically advanced maritime nation.

Faster, Smarter, Stronger: A Benchmark in Shipbuilding Efficiency

The construction of INS Mahendragiri stands as a testament to the continuous improvement and enhanced efficiency achieved in the Project 17A shipbuilding programme at MDL. The ship achieved a remarkable 21% reduction in build period compared to the First-of-Class vessel. Through dedicated efforts and close technical collaboration among MDL, the Indian Navy Team and the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai), the ship successfully completed Sea Trials and Final Machinery Trials within just two months of Basin Trials - an exceptional achievement for vessels of this class.

Demonstrating its formidable shipbuilding and delivery capabilities, MDL has delivered five (05) warships and one (01) submarine to the Indian Navy within a span of just sixteen (16) months. Key combat systems - including SRGM, AK-630, BrahMos, Kavach, IRL and their associated magazines - achieved full operational readiness prior to delivery through the seamless, coordinated efforts of MDL, the Indian Navy and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

Championing Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India

The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri reflects MDLs unwavering commitment to the Government of Indi&s flagship initiatives of Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and Make in India, aimed at achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing and reducing dependence on foreign technologies. With approximately 75% indigenous content, the ship stands as a powerful testament to Indi&s growing prowess in indigenous warship design, construction and systems integration.

The project showcases the collective expertise of the Indian Navy, MDL and a robust network of Indian industries - including numerous MSMEs - thereby strengthening the domestic defence industrial ecosystem while promoting innovation, skill development and employment generation.
