Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works to Establish Smart Shipyard in Palghar

Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Limited (KMEW) has announced a significant strategic expansion into large-scale maritime infrastructure. Through its subsidiary, Knowledge Shipyard Private Limited, the company has acquired 15 acres of prime waterfront land at Saphale, Palghar, Maharashtra, with an option to expand by an additional 5 acres.

This acquisition marks KMEW's transition into a technology-driven shipbuilding enterprise, providing a dedicated platform for sustainable vessel construction and repair.

Strategic Location and Natural Advantages

The new site is situated along the Vaitarna River, strategically positioned near the upcoming Vadhvan Port. The location was chosen for its natural marine features that facilitate high-efficiency shipbuilding:

Waterfront Access: Approximately 188 meters of direct river frontage.

Draft Capabilities: A natural slipway offering a ~6m high-tide draft, suitable for significant vessel movement.

Connectivity: Strong multimodal links to the Mumbai-Palghar industrial corridor.

Developing a "Smart & Green" Shipyard Ecosystem

KMEW plans to develop the Palghar facility as a digitally enabled and environmentally responsible shipyard. The infrastructure will focus on the following core areas:

Integrated Workshops: Dedicated units for hull fabrication, mechanical, electrical, and piping works designed with streamlined, automated workflows.

Sustainability Features: The design includes advanced sewage treatment plants, structured waste management systems, and energy-optimized utilities to align with global green manufacturing standards.

Full Lifecycle Support: The facility will handle everything from initial construction to long-term repair and maintenance, creating a self-sustaining maritime hub.

Enhancing Workforce and Operations

The project includes a "people-centric" design to ensure high performance and operational excellence:

Digital Integration: Administrative offices and training centers will be fully digitally enabled.

On-site Amenities: The facility will feature on-site accommodation and secure logistics systems to support a future-ready workforce.

Capitalizing on National Maritime Policies

KMEW's expansion comes at a time when the Indian government is aggressively promoting indigenous shipbuilding through several key initiatives:

Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy (SBFAP): Providing fiscal support for domestic ship construction.

Green Tug Transition Programme: Driving the demand for sustainable and eco-friendly maritime vessels.

Maritime India Vision 2030: A roadmap to propel India into a top global shipbuilding nation.

By establishing this dedicated shipyard, KMEW is positioned to capitalize on the rising demand for indigenous, technology-backed maritime solutions. This development signals the company's evolution from a service-oriented dredging and small-craft operator to a comprehensive maritime infrastructure player.

Commenting on the Said Shipyard land Acquisition, Mr. Sujay Kewalramani, CEO of Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Ltd said that, "This shipyard land is not merely an acquisition; it is the dawn of a new maritime chapter for KMEW Group. With a strategically located waterfront near Vadhvan Port and a natural slipway that offers inherent operational excellence, we are laying the foundation for India's next great shipbuilding hub. Our phased expansion - from specialized workboats and tugs in Phase I, to integrated repair facilities and floating dry docks in Phase II, and finally to large-scale vessels in Phase III - reflects a carefully sequenced journey of scale, innovation, and resilience.

We are building more than ships; we are building a self-sustaining maritime engine that will serve as a beacon of India's shipbuilding renaissance. Supported by India's amenities, advanced fabrication capacity, and a people-centric environment, this facility will deliver end-to-end solutions across the vessel lifecycle.

Aligned with the Government of India's vision under Maritime India 2030 and Amrit Kaal 2047, our shipyard positions KMEW to contribute meaningfully to national self-reliance, green transition, and global competitiveness. We see this not only as an investment in infrastructure but as an investment in India's maritime destiny - a future where our shipyard stands as a gateway to innovation, sustainability, and leadership on the world stage."
