JOINS THE RANKS OF SELECT FEW GLOBAL COMPANIES HAVING THIS CAPABILITY
Mumbai: Crompton Greaves Limited (CG), an Indian Multinational with manufacturing bases in 8 countries, has become the first company in India to indigenously manufacture an 800 kV class Power Transformer on behalf of M/s NTPC for its Sipat STTP Project Stage1 at Chattisgarh. Manufactured at Crompton’s state-of-the-art facility at Mandideep (MP), this makes the company a part of the select few global companies having this capability. Most companies have the expertise to manufacture only upto 400 class kV Power Transformers. CG has orders on hand for 11 such transformers from M/s NTPC Ltd.
To manufacture such transformers, Crompton has technical collaboration with M/s Toshiba of Japan, which is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of power transformers.
Says Mr Sudhir M Trehan, MD, Crompton Greaves, "As India’s transmission system converts from the existing 400 kV levels to global standards of efficient Extra High Voltage 765 kV systems with improved power quality and grid reliability, Crompton shall be at the forefront to usher in the change."
Presently an 800 kV Power Transformer is the highest grade system voltage for transmission worldwide and results in fewer transmission and Distribution (T&D) losses in addition to lesser maintenance and other overheads. The per unit power cost thus goes down substantially in such transformers.
Crompton Greaves is among the top seven power transformer manufacturers in the world and among the very few companies worldwide to design and manufacture the widest range of Power & Distribution Transformers and Reactors to fulfill the specific demands of industry. The company has an installed base of 120 million kVA in Transformers and boasts of the World’s largest fully shielded Ultra High Voltage (UHV) Laboratory attached to a Power Transformer manufacturing unit.
The Power Transformer division of this highly diversified company is the largest exporter of power transformers from India since 1997-98 and has a giant market share of 22% in the domestic market comprising of industries like Power utilities, Process industries, Railways, Mines, Electricity Boards etc.
