Geodesic Information Systems Ltd has announced that the Company and Gothenburg Post, a daily newspaper from Stampen Group, Sweden have launched GP-Qrir, an interoperable Instant Messenger on the desktop and mobile platform. This will enable Qrir users to receive regular and constant news updates through this IM platform. The launch of GP-Qrir powered by Geodesic technology forms a part of GP's overall business strategy to increase its reach by deploying user-friendly and innovative technology.
Gothenburg Post (GP), a leading daily newspaper in Sweden is published by the Stampen Group, Sweden's second largest publishing house. The newspaper is over 150 years old and commands good readership and excellent brand equity, particularly in the western region of Sweden. The Stampen Group has a turnover of 447 million USD, with GP contributing 37%.
A unique feature of the Gp-Qrir is its "Interoperability" across different messengers. This cross-network interoperability enables to communicate with all the major. IM service providers in the world like Microsoft, Yahoo and AIM etc through a single user interface. All the features such as cross conference chats, share files and pictures are accessible through the same interface.
"Sweden has the largest internet penetration in the world and the mobile telephony penetration is very strong in terms of numbers as well as usage. The messenger has been designed to be a complete internet communication tool, irrespective of whether it is being used from a desktop or mobile. Considering the high level of internet usage in Sweden and the fact that instant messaging is the fourth most widely used application in the mobile space, we are very bullish about GP-Qrir redefining instant messaging as we know it today," said Mr. Jaydip Deshpande, Managing Director, Geodesic Sweden AB."
Mr. Deshpande also added, "Defining GP-Qrir as a "messenger" is only a starting point. In a society where mobile telephone is a communication life-line, an attractively priced mobile IM like the GP-Qrir can reduce the monthly outgo on mobile phone bills".
The GP-Qrir is available in Swedish and English. Customization of news and the facility to choose areas of news updates like music, politics, sports, films, fashions etc is done with a view to cater to the convenience of a variety of age and interest groups. Gothenburg Post and Geodesic are looking at reaching GP's traditional readership base as well as a large percentage of the young population outside the newspaper readership fold.
The GP-Qrir mobile version is currently available on twenty popular J2ME devices. Work is in progress to get the GP-Qrir IM on a host of J2ME, Symbian and Windows mobile devices, thus covering more than 50% of the population in Sweden, GP-Qrir can be used with all services operators without any contact or binding.
