Suzlon Energy secures 31.5 MW order from Canada-based Sprott Power Corp

The North American subsidiary of Suzlon Energy Limited (SEL), Suzlon Wind Energy Corp.has secured a new order for 15 S97-2.1 MW wind turbines at an Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada wind power project in development by Sprott Power Corp. The project is slated for completion in March 2012, and Suzlon is delivering the project under an Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) turnkey contract. With total installations of 31.5 MW, the project at full capacity will produce enough energy to power more than 11,000 Canadian homes. Suzlon Group reinforces its presence in Canada after securing 300 MW in orders through REpower in January this year.

"This is our first order of the new S9X turbines in North America and we're pleased Sprott chose Suzlon for this project," said Andris Cukurs, CEO of Suzlon Wind Energy Corp. "The S9X-2.1 MW turbine is an evolution of Suzlon's proven technology platform and every aspect of the turbine features enhanced design to deliver a higher return on investment for the customer," said Cukurs.

The S9X suite of wind turbines has been developed to take advantage of low-tomoderate wind speeds. The S9X suite has evolved from S88 which is Suzlon's proven work horse providing over 97% availability globally from [2000] running wind turbines in diverse climates, grids and terrains. New blade designs, with 95- and 97- meter rotor diameters, provides a larger swept area for more power production at lower wind speeds. To ensure the highest standards in quality, Suzlon's blade testing far exceeds the industry baseline by simulating blade performance for extreme onsite conditions.

"Sprott Power is pleased to embark on our latest wind power project with experienced wind turbine suppliers like Suzlon," said Jeff Jenner, CEO of Sprott Power. "We've seen the outstanding availability record of Suzlon's fleet of turbines in the U.S. and believe their evolutionary S97 turbine will be an ideal fit for our power plant needs. We expect that the completion of the Amherst Project will nearly double our annual production of renewable energy."

Pursuant to a 10-year warranty, maintenance and service agreement, Suzlon will provide operation and maintenance services for the Amherst Project.

The S97 turbines at Amherst will be installed on 90-meter hub height towers. The S9X turbines have variable tower heights of 90 or 100 meters, leading to low cost optimization and higher power generation. The turbines also comply with low voltage regulation (LVRT) requirement, which leads to better compliance with grid regulation. Additionally, improved sub-systems, like the new pitch and yaw systems, have increased system reliability of the turbines. The end result is a range of extremely reliable products, delivering significant increase in energy yield at a low cost through its life cycle.

Wind power installations in Canada have been experiencing exponential growth in recent years due to the favorable economic and policy environment; the cumulative wind power installed capacity in Canada surpassed 4 GW by the end of 2010.

The stock was trading at Rs.53.15, up by Rs.0.75 or 1.43%. The stock hit an intraday high of Rs.53.75 and low of Rs.52.75.

The total traded quantity was 12.45 lakhs compared to 2 week average of 25.76 lakhs.
