IndiGo, India's preferred airline, has announced the launch of direct flights connecting Kolkata (West Bengal) and Purnea (Bihar), thrice every week, starting 15 September 2025. Purnea is IndiGo's 94th domestic and 137th overall destination, and fourth in Bihar after Patna, Gaya, and Darbhanga. Commencement of IndiGo's service on this route will also mark the inauguration of the Purnea airport, underscoring the airline's commitment to enhancing connectivity to Tier-II and Tier-III cities.
Flights on this new route will be operated with IndiGo's ATR aircraft, ensuring seamless and affordable air travel for customers between Bihar's Seemanchal region and Kolkata, eastern India's major aviation hub. With this, travellers from Purnea will get access to IndiGo's vast domestic and international network via Kolkata. This development will not only enable IndiGo to expand access to underserved markets but also promote trade, tourism, and economic growth in eastern India.
Mr. Vinay Malhotra, Head of Sales, IndiGo, said, "We are proud to further strengthen regional connectivity with the addition of Purnea, Bihar to our growing network. An emerging centre for trade and industry in the state, Purnea becomes our 94th domestic destination, with direct, thrice weekly flights to and from our eastern hub in Kolkata. We are also honoured to be the first airline to operate from this newly launched airport. With this new route, we reaffirm our commitment to making air travel more affordable and accessible, while unlocking new opportunities in Tier-II and Tier-III cities across India."
Purnea is preparing for the commercial launch of its airport under the UDAN scheme. The introduction of air travel will strengthen the region's infrastructure to support its agriculture and food processing sector, while also fostering growth in its upcoming healthcare and education industries.
