Sterlite Optical new facility at Haridwar commences production

Sterlite Optical Technologies Ltd has announced that the Company has commenced manufacture at its new Power Transmission and Distribution Conductors facility at Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Sterlite now has a cumulative manufacturing capacity of 115,000 MT (Metric Tonnes), making it the largest manufacturer in India and amongst the Top 5 global manufacturers of Power Conductors.

This facility includes the latest generation drawing and stranding machines capable of manufacturing standard and specialized power conductor products. A Properzi Rolling Mill capable of producing specialized mechanical alloys is also being installed, and this would be commissioned within September 2007.

At the start of Q2 2007-08, the Company had an order book of INR 9.8 Billion (US$ 240 Million) from India and other global markets for its Power Transmission Conductor Products, based on customer delivery requirements, over 75% of these contracts would be executed within FY 2007-08.

With our economies of scale, capability to develop products as per evolving needs of the industry and sustained demand for our products through Year 2012, we see our strategic blueprint becoming a reality."

The Company is a significant contributor to the global power sector with a complete range of power transmission conductors at Extra High Voltages (400kV - 800kV), High Voltages (66kV - 220kV) and power distribution conductors (11kV - 33kV). The Company currently has about 3% global market share for Power Transmission Conductors and these products have been sold in 38 countries across Africa, Middle East, Asia & Europe. Sterlite currently supplies about 27% of India's total demand for power transmission & distribution conductors.
