Markets began the week on a positive note - HDFC Securities

Markets began the week on a positive note as the main indices witnessed a stellar rally before closing with over 1% gains on Monday. The upmove came on the back of twin surprises, inflation falling to three-year low of 7.1% in Dec and GAAR getting deferred to April 2016.

The main indices ended on a mixed note. While the BSE Sensex closed 242.77pts or 1.23% higher at 19,906.41, the Nifty gained 72.75pts or 1.22% to close at 6,024.05. Broad market indices too ended higher as the BSE Mid Cap and Small Cap indices gained 1.2% and 0.74% respectively. Market breadth was positive as the A/D ratio was 1.59:1 on the BSE. NSE cash turnover was Rs.12,703crs. Vs. Rs.14,024crs. in the previous session.

Barring the BSE Auto and Healthcare indices, all the sectoral indices ended higher. The top gainers were the BSE Realty, IT, CD and Oil and Gas indices. The biggest gainers from the BSE 30 were ONGC, Infy, Jindal Steel and TCS. The biggest losers were Maruti, Cipla, Bajaj Auto and Tata Motors.

As per the provisional figures on Monday, FIIs were net buyers of Rs. 611 cr in the cash market, while they were marginal net sellers of Rs. 57 cr in the F&O markets. However, DIIs were net sellers of Rs. 1211 cr in the cash market.
