Roads with polymer and rubber being laid at selected locations

Polymer and rubber modified bitumen is used in wearing course of pavement at selected locations on National Highways. Construction activities on National Highways have now increased many fold and kilometre wise details of use of modified bitumen in wearing course of the pavement are not compiled in the Ministry.

There has been a mixed response about the performance of modified bitumen from no marked improvement to good vis-à-vis bitumen without modifier. Specific use of polymer and rubber modified bitumen is decided on case to case basis.

Indian Roads Congress (IRC) has published guidelines on use of Polymer and Rubber Modified Bitumen in Road Construction and the same have been accepted by the Ministry for adoption.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Shri K.H. Muniyappa in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
