              The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T.R. Baalu has approved road improvement works in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
An amount of Rs. 230.83 Lakh has been granted for restoration of damages due to Tsunami from km 113/6-115/0, km 139/0-140/0, km 145/0-146/0 km, km 154/0-156/6 and km 157/8-159/0 of NH-49 near Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu. These stretches have developed large cracks and potholes.
Therefore, it is necessary to carry out restoration works on pavement as well as earthen shoulders on either side.
An amount of Rs. 184.59 lakh has been approved for Improvement of Riding Quality from km 38/500 to 42/500 of NH-49 in Usilampatti town of Tamil Nadu. This stretch connects the Madurai to Cochin. The existing riding surface of the road is in worn out condition and patches were formed.
An amount of Rs. 127.55 lakh has been approved for Reconstructuion of culverts at km 68/6, 70/4, 70/8, 86/6, 109/6, 110/8, 113/2, 114/10 (i) & (ii), 116/4 (i) & (ii) of NH-45 A on Pondicherry-Chidambaram Road. The existing culverts are narrow and in weak condition and therefore the reconstruction is essential for the smooth flow of traffic.
An amount of Rs. 56.41 lakh has been sanctioned for shifting of utilities for proposed two laning of stretch from km. 479 to 490 of Sholapur-Mangalore Section of NH-13 in the State of Karnataka. This carriageway is intermediate lane and single lane in some stretches. Hence, it is proposed to take up the shifting of utilities separately before the widening work could be sanctioned. Accordingly provision for shifting of electrical pole, water supply pipeline and cutting of trees and afforestation has been allowed in the instant proposal.
