Attero ushers responsible e-waste management in corporate India

New Delhi, 9th November, 2009: Attero Recycling, India’s only integrated electronic waste (e-waste) recycling company is fast turning into the ‘conscience-keeper’ of the Indian and multinational corporates providing them end-to-end e-waste recycling solutions and helping them shoulder their environmental burden ethically. Many corporates have now stepped forward to tie-up up with Attero, India’s first government recognised e-waste recycler thus successfully foraying into the environmentally responsible domain.

E-waste disposal in India has been a steadily growing concern among environmentally and socially conscious groups. Developing countries have traditionally been the dumping yard of hazardous wastes for developed nations. Around 50,000 tonnes of e-waste comes to India annually through this exit door in the garb of reusable magnanimity and makes its way to the unsafe and unauthorized dumping yards where they are dismantled manually and unscientifically posing grave health and environment risks.

The threat posed to the environment by the proliferation of toxic e-waste had been an issue till recently relegated to the backburner in the absence of either government authorized recycling agencies or policies to regulate it. However, with e-waste recycling entering the corporate domain with Attero, India’s first recognized e-waste recycler; many companies are now actively partnering it for solutions to reduce its toxic footprints.

Although Attero Recycling had stepped in 2008 to manage the challenges of sustainable e-waste solutions in India, the low levels of awareness were a challenge. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Ministry of Environment & Forests, and Government of India, recognized Attero Recycling as India’s only end-to-end fully integrated e-waste recycling company recently, and with this move provided a much needed fillip to environmentally sustainable recycling. With a state-of-the-art plant operational in Roorkee, Uttarkhand, Attero has a pan-India presence with offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai and collection centers all over.

Hospitality corporations like The Leela and Mariott, FMCG giants like Pepsi and Information Technology powerhouses like Wipro have added to their CSR portfolios by partnering Attero to become the first in their industry to acknowledge and actively seek solutions to the magnitude of the problem being faced by explosion of e-waste in the country.

Among the first to partner Attero in its mission is the global consumer durable giant LG. It has not only announced Attero Recycling as its exclusive e-waste recycling partner in India but also kick-started an “E-waste Collection” initiative to motivate the lay customer to adopt e-waste recycling and facilitate its responsible disposal. The company has set up 50 collection boxes at all its stores under this drive for the safe disposal and recycle of its mobile handsets.

Commenting on its tie up with Attero, Mr Pradeep Dwivedi, Senior VP, Tata Teleservices Limited (TTSL) said, “E-waste disposal is now one of biggest concerns and the dangerous implications flowing out of this environmental hazard makes it imperative to have an efficient mechanism in place for responsible recycling of it. Hence, this tie-up, which will help us treat our electronic waste in a safe and efficient manner, is of great importance to us. The lack of an environmentally responsible end-to-end recycler of e-waste was being sorely felt. Attero has taken a remarkable step that will definitely spark a revolution and help us ensure a safer planet for our coming generations.”

A Wipro spokesperson said- “E-waste is now one of the fastest growing waste streams and the dangerous nature of it makes it imperative that we have an efficient mechanism in place for responsible recycling of it. Thus, this tie-up, which will help us treat our electronic waste in a safe and efficient manner. The lack of an environmentally responsible end-to-end recycler was being sorely felt. Attero Recycling has taken a remarkable step that will definitely spark a revolution and help us ensure a safer planet for our coming generations.”

Mr. Nitin Gupta, CEO, Attero Recycling, speaking about the corporate partnerships said, “We are pleased that corporate India understands the burgeoning problem of e-waste in the country and its responsibility towards addressing it. It has now joined ranks with other emerging and developed economies as an environmentally-conscious, responsible entity with regard to the mounting menace of e-waste. By acknowledging this problem and taking this step, these companies have created a benchmark for others to follow. Awareness is the key to a sustainable environment and with the top companies joining hands with us, it definitely encourage others to follow. We at Attero strongly believe in 3 R’s— Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. Attero recycling is the only recycling company that does complete processing of e-waste with zero landfill.”
