Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (Tata Power- DDL), a leading power utility that supplies electricity to a populace of over 7 million in North Delhi, in its endeavor to stay ahead of the curve and bolster gender equality at workplace, participated in the Engendering Utilities Program, sponsored by USAID. USAID is the world's premier international development agency and a catalytic actor driving development results.
The Gender Equity Executive Leadership Program (GEELP) has been co-developed by USAID, Tetratech and Georgetown University, to strengthen gender equity in the energy sector while helping utilities addressing key gender gaps within their companies and meet their core business goals. Three representatives from the company completed their graduation from the Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business: Amita Sharma (Zonal Manager), Yamini Gogia (Head- Corporate Budgeting& Finance) & Jawed Salim Khan (Assistant General Manager, Talent Acquisition & People Analytics).
The objective of the program was to assist Engendering Utilities partners to improve their gender policies and gender outcomes. The participants were provided virtual and in-person coaching sessions by the assigned Engendering Utilities Human Resources and Gender Advisor - Ms. Jessica Boehm, who guided them on global best practices and implementation of the identified priority interventions over the course of two years.
The leadership program teaches participants to analyze existing company policies and practices that address gender disparities and improve company performance. Together with their dedicated change management coach, participants from partner utilities create action plans to address gaps and monitor their progress toward a more equitable workplace. Using a customized scorecard tool, participants and their coaches help organizations make strategic, data-driven decisions to prioritize gender equality interventions, and track the progress of these interventions and their impact on organizational performance.
"Women are underrepresented in the formal workforce globally, and particularly in male-dominated industries, like the energy and water sectors. This is not simply an issue of fairness, it's a missed economic opportunity," said USAID Senior Gender Advisor Corinne Hart. "Research shows that when women serve as leaders and employees of private companies, businesses benefit and performance improves."
Congratulating the employees on their graduation, Mr. Ganesh Srinivasan CEO, Tata Power-DDL said, "Capacity building and up skilling is an important pillar of employee development. We are thankful to USAID for supporting us in strengthening our development initiatives. The Gender Equity Executive Leadership Program will surely help us to become future ready and make us learn the global best practices to further promote gender equality at workplace. I would also like to congratulate our participants for successfully completing the program."
