Venky's India Limited clarifies on Avian Influenza (bird flu) outbreak

Venky's (India) Limited has given certain clarifications on the outbreak of bird flu in some States of India in the first week of January, 2021.

Sometime around 5th January, 2021 some dead crows were found in Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh and, after laboratory testing, it was found that these crows have died due to bird flu. Similar instances were noticed in some other parts of the country as well, where crows, ducks and some backyard poultry birds were also found dead.

However, in the organized poultry sector, till date not even a single poultry bird was found to be infected by bird flu. Organized farming consists of rearing of birds by providing proper housing conditions, where disinfection and cleaning of the sheds take place regularly at high standards. In the organized poultry sector, the birds are always reared, with very high standard practices like bio-security norms of men and material movements, high quality feed along with preventive vaccination programs to prevent any viral outbreak. This clearly demarcates organized poultry sector from backyard and unorganized farming.

Clarification from the Government of India:

In order to remove confusion among general public, the Government of India also provided clarifications. According to the Department of Animal Husbandry, Government of India, avian influenza (bird flu) occurs almost every year in some parts of the country through migratory birds, which bring the infection to India from across the world. The outbreaks usually happen in winter months till February. Consumers of poultry products (chicken and eggs) need not panic about avian flu which is a common phenomenon not only in India but throughout the world. Further, in the history of bird flu in India since 2006, not a single instance has been reported when the infection from birds was passed on to humans. There should be no apprehension about consumption of poultry products in India since the Indian way of cooking meat and eggs automatically ensures safety of such items for consumption.

It is important to note that the poultry sector is playing a major role in employing the small farmers to improve their income and ensuring rural employment along with addressinq malnutrition. The poultry sector has grown rapidly because of the integration system of poultry farming. Not only the poultry farmers alone, the maize and soya growers are also benefited from the poultry sector as the major share of maize produced is consumed by poultry. Any unnecessary panic or confusion about consumption of poultry products (though temporary) will hurt the farmers of maize and soya and other inputs.
