Frontier Lifeline Hospital (Dr. K. M. Cherian Heart Foundation) performed a life-saving, and ground-breaking rare surgery recently on a Nigerian national.
Mrs. Ighoko Patience Ladi, a 30-year old woman from Nigeria had complaints of difficulty in swallowing and was suspected to have a gastric disorder in her home town. On further evaluation, it was believed that she had a large tumor inside the heart. Hospitals in Nigeria refused to operate on her. Hence, Mrs Ighoko approached Frontier Lifeline Hospital at Chennai for help.
Mrs. Patience was admitted at Frontier Lifeline Hospital on 10th November and detailed investigation showed that the tumor was not inside the heart, but outside it; so large that it was compressing the esophagus, lungs and the heart, causing difficulty in swallowing, breathlessness and lowering her cardiac pressures. Her symptoms had become so severe that she was unable to walk and even breathe. Mrs Patience was taken for emergency surgery on 12th November 2015, and during the surgery it was noted that the tumor measured 18cm and was attached to the spine in the back portion of the chest. Biopsy of the tumor revealed a rare "Liposarcoma of the posterior Mediastinum."
Speaking about the surgery, Dr. Sanjay Cherian, Vice President, Frontier Lifeline Hospital, said, "There are only 100 such cases of Liposarcomas of the posterior mediastinum that have been reported in the world so far. We are glad that we were able to arrive at the correct diagnosis and provide the appropriate treatment to Mrs. Patience. The surgery lasted 4 hours and we were able to completely and successfully remove the tumor. Mrs. Patience has recovered well and is now able to breathe and eat well, and is also walking around."
Mrs. Patience said, "I was told that I have a tumor in my heart which could not be treated in Nigeria. A friend of mine who was previously treated at Frontier Lifeline, gave me the contact details. We arrived at Frontier Lifeline hospital on 10.11.15. Two days later the tumor was removed completely by the team of doctors. I thank the entire staff of Frontier Lifeline Hospital."
