Azim Premji University and Institute for New Economic Thinking to Expand on Research Collaboration

Azim Premji University and the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) will deepen and broaden their collaboration on research and related initiatives in academic and public dialogue. This would include the areas of development, sustainability, human capital formation, early childhood development, and the political economy of distribution.

The University and INET signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in January 2012, and since then have jointly conducted annual summer and winter workshops on issues of development. The first Advanced Graduate Workshop in Indian Development was held in July 2012. The workshop was open to advanced Ph.D. social science students in any Indian university and explored critical debates in Indian economic development. These workshops were held in Bangalore. Since then four more workshops have been conducted.

As part of Azim Premji University's 'Public Lecture Series', talks by Joseph Stiglitz were organized in 2012 and 2013, and a conversation with George Soros was organized in 2012.

The deepening of the collaboration envisages focused workshops and conferences to foster academic and public dialogue. Also long term research on the issues directly relevant to the Indian context. It will also include joint development of material for teaching and advocacy in these areas, which would be used by INET's partner network across the world

Mr. Anurag Behar, Vice Chancellor, Azim Premji University, said, "Azim Premji University and INET collaboration provides opportunities for students and researchers from across India to collaboratively engage on issues of development with each other and with leading academics and practitioners from all over the world."

Mr. Rob Johnson, President, INET, said, "Given the enormous intellectual challenges and opportunities facing India, an important step is to build a new generation of scholars and practitioners that have a critical perspective that can contribute towards rethinking and reshaping the public debate."
